![]() ![]() Her roommates include Rachel, a brilliant grad student and poet, and Seven, a heartbreakingly handsome bartender and drug dealer. When Evie makes the move from her parents’ house in the suburb of Dorval to a room with a view in the heart of the bohemian Plateau, she is still a baby, never having experienced heartbreak, loss or discrimination. Whittall sustains a sensitivity to a Montreal divided not only by English and French, oui et non, but by the increasing visibility of an educated urban class rising up against the staunch old Catholic rule.Ĭharged by Whittall’s feminist voice, the narrative centres around Evie, who starts off smelling like a cupcake and gets more hard-core every day. The story, set in Montreal from 1995 to the early spring of 96, encompasses both the referendum and the Montreal Massacre. It’s a delicious, bright suburban delicacy melting in the inner-city sun. Bottle Rocket Hearts, the debut novel from NOW contributor Zoe Whittall, is a coming-of-age tale that goes down like a cherry popsicle. ![]()

The best books are where you enjoy every part of the journey, not just the payoff, and this is one of those books. Very rarely have sentences come across to me as DELICIOUS, or have made me twitch in ecstasy as I read them (please read the book, don’t look at me like that). There is a magical fairytale touch to the writing, the characters are exceptionally well developed, and the language is a delight to read. The story slowly expands to fill up her past, present and future as well as that of her mother and family. The story tells of the desperate efforts to preserve Homo sapiens in the wake of apocalyptic events on Earth after the unexplained disintegration of the Moon and the remaking of human society as a space-based civilization after a severe genetic bottleneck. (I wrote individual reviews for each book on Amazon & Goodreads). Since I do not include spoilers in my reviews and the below applies equally to all volumes I’ve read, I’ve made this post a review of the whole series. That should give you an idea about how much I love the series. I actually wrote this post after finishing the 3rd volume, Persona Non Grata, back in November – but since I schedule posts in advance and have been catching up on my reading over the holidays, I had the chance to finish the other volumes in the series between writing this and posting.
