Eleven men played alphorns in the center of town an hour ago!!!! I am wearing my Swiss Berner Club 100th Anniversary pin and carrying pictures of the Berners and Appenzeller! I LOVE IT HERE but, after 8 days, I must return to the USA next week. I am in Paradise! No, not that one! The OTHER one! Yesterday, in a town near Appenzell, called Weissbad, I finally SAW IT! Shepherds and boys in FULL Swiss “dress” AND their APPENELLER MOUNTAIN DOG bringing cattle back to the farm!!!!!! IT WAS BREATHTAKING!!!! And, in Appenzell, on October 4, I shall be present for the CATTLE SHOW!!!! Today and tomorrow, there are Swiss choirs playing, in FULL SWISS dress, on traditional instruments, all over town and the music carries me to another realm. ![]() To say that she enjoyed herself would be an understatement. We recently sent Ryder-Walker guest Lisa Allen to the Appenzell region of eastern Switzerland. ![]() ![]() ![]() I really love bottle episodes (or stories that mimic them), because it’s a great way for a writer to really develop a small space and everything that happens in it to the finest detail, not the least of which is the character. ![]() ![]() They mostly consist of dialogue and simple plot formulas (if any at all). They are usually filmed in a single room or location, with a minimal cast and very few effects. Bottle episodes in television are used mainly as a way to save money, but they can be some of the greatest episodes ever. I came up with “The Shiva Apparatus” out of a desire to apply the “bottle episode” theory to a short story. “I see short stories as a way to experiment with time-honored themes and tropes, and my stories have ranged from bugs to technology run amok to love at first sight. Also gracing the pages is “The Shiva Apparatus.” She has previously published “Under the Scotch Broom” in eBook format, and we are so happy to include it in this collection.
